October Meeting Notes 2012

Minutes of Oct. 25, 2012 Fundy Quilters
Information on the Jelly Roll Workshop with Jan Weedon was shared.  Janet showed a sample of a finished quilt.  The workshop will start at 9:30.  Bring finger food to share. Janet will make a big pot of soup and we will have a potluck lunch.  There is no charge for he workshop for members . Non-members pay $20.00 ( which will make them paid up members of Fundy Quilters)

Our November meeting will be a Quarter Quction. Bring something to auction and some quarters for bidding. Our charity this year will be the Berwick Legion.  Our spring fundraiser will be for the IWK. People can donate items for a table at the Centreville Baptist Church Quilt Show in May 2013.

Janet showed the finished tree skirt we made for Grandview Manor.
We took in fat quarters to send to Pat O’Brien.
The fat quarter flannel draw was won by Heather. Next month the fat quarter theme will be Christmas or snowman prints.

We discussed the challenge quilt project and we decided to use The Essential Quilt Sampler Book by Lynn Edwards. Janet has ordered copies for everyone who asked for one. The price will be $23.69 each including tax and delivery.
We decided to buy something called bed height lifters to put under our cutting table at the manor. This will make it easier to cut out fabric there and we can store it in the tub we keep there. Janet will find out where to buy it. ( moved by Ann and seconded by Heather)
Show and Tell:
Molly had 2 runners made with “Little Twister” tool and also a wall hanging of a cat with a sewing machine
Ann showed a Puppy Quilt
Janet showed a Halloween wall hanging
We also decided to reinstate the snack at the meeting.   This is to be a very light snack—and Janet will bring the tea/coffee each month.

September Meeting notes and Jelly Roll Info

Brenda wants to remind people to bring in their dues. :-)
We had a great Sew In Saturday last weekend. We had lots of sewers and we had a great time making the tree skirt for the residents of the Manor. Some people want to make one more for themselves so if you are interested, bring 200 squares of 5 inch Christmas fabric to this month's meeting. You may want to exchange to get more variety. I will put the picture on the blog.( fundyquilters.blogspot.com)
The winner of the fat quarter draw last month was Molly. She has chosen flannel for this month.
We are also asking people to donate a fat quarter so we can get a care package to Pat who has had to move to Alberta suddenly.
Sharon and Ann have agreed to let us donate items to the Mothers' Day quilt show in Centreville. Proceeds will go to the IWK for this venture.  Our quarter auction will be held in November with proceeds going to the legion to help them stay open in Berwick.
If you are interested , Ann is hosting a sew day at the Berwick Legion every Monday from 9 until 3 PM. Tea/coffee are provided but bring your own lunch. Cost is freewill offering($3.00 minimum)

On November 10, we are hosting a JellyRoll Race workshop at the South Berwick Community Hall. Jan Weedon is the teacher and she would like to start at 9:30. I will be at the hall by 8:45 so people can get set up. You will have a completed quilt top by the end of the day--usually after an hour. Please let me know if you will be attending so I can let Jan know how many will be there. It is a lot of fun.  It is free if you are a member of Fundy Quilters and we will charge a nominal fee of $20.00 for nonmembers ($20.00 is our membership fee) We will plan a potluck lunch that day--I will make a slowcooker full of soup.

We were attempting to arrange a schedule for our meetings but we will need to complete it this October!  This is what I have so far so please let me know if I have forgotten something. Except for November, all our Sew In days are work on your own projects--and you can sew on your own project if you do not want to do the jelly roll race in November.
Oct.--finish tree skirt if necessary and have an exchange of squares for those interested

Sew In and Retreat Update

There will NOT be any meetings or Sew In Saturday events during July.  There will be the great Shore Yard Sale on July 14  in Black Rock so make sure you check out the home made doughnuts and other great bargains that day.  Check with Alice if you need more information.  There are lots of quilters there who will probably be selling fabric items.:-)
We will have the August Sew In Saturday on Saturday Aug 11

We had a great time and lively discussion at the pot luck supper last week. The big topic was the 3rd annual retreat in Shediac in September 21-22-23.  At the moment we are planning to go to my cottage and perhaps check out a few local  quilt shops.  Then we will drive to Calais, Maine aka  Marden's to check out the bargain fabrics. It was decided that we would do this as a day trip because the cost of any duty we had to pay would be made up in the difference in not having to pay  hotel room fees. We can also pack a picnic lunch to keep the cost of meals down. Most frequent Marden shoppers say that the Calais store is better than the Bangor one anyway. That way we can bring sewing machines and sew at my cottage.
We also discussed some program ideas for the fall. People expressed interest in a jelly roll race workshop and  a french braid workshop but I got so excited thinking about it that I forgot to write down all the ideas. . . .  We will plan our schedule at the September meeting so get your ideas in we can talk about it in September.

Blocks 11 and 12 of the Mystery Quilt

I am posting this so that people can have a look and then next week we can decide on the layout of your mystery quilt. If you want to just use the twelve blocks you can decide how you want the layout to look. I am attempting to put a lighthouse in the centre if anyone wants to try that . It will be 24 inches square so you can still use all twelve blocks in your quilt. I will bring tissue paper so you can trace it if you like.

Blocks 11 and 12 of the Fundy Mystery Quilt Project 2012

Framed 4 Patch Block
Individual Pieces for One Quilt Block
·         Four 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" squares
·         Two 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles
·         Two 2-1/2" x 8-1/2" bars
This block finishes to 8 inches so we will need to add another 2 ½ inch strip all around the outside to make our block  12 inches—two 2-1/2 inch by 8 ½ inch rectangles and two  2-1/2 inch by 12 -1/2  inch rectangles

Rail Fence Block
Take  3 strips 2-1/2 inches long from your jellyroll strips and sew them together. Cut the strips 6-1/2 inches –you will need 4 cuts.
OR
If you prefer  cut 12    2-1/2 strips 6-1/2 inches long and sew them into 4 sets of three strips. You can use different fabrics if you want a really scrappy look.

Informal Minutes of the March 29 Meeting

Informal Minutes of the March Fundy Quilters Meeting

Grandview Manor, March 29, 2012

This was a very busy meeting.  We completed 19 bibs for the seniors and a few people took some home to finish. It was fun and the bibs looked beautiful. ( see below for the pictures)   Mary  Jane was going to deliver  them.

Sharon won the fat quarter draw and she has chosen flowers  for the theme next month .

Our balance is quite healthy--  $416.72

The Fundy Foodbank sent us a thank you for our donation of $300.00.  Their supplies are very low and they were glad to have such a generous donation.

Molly has designed quilt labels for the Thimbleberries Safe Haven quilt that some of us made.   Contact her if you want one. She will charge $10.00 for it to cover her supplies.

We had a discussion on what we should do for a charity quilt next fall. People seemed to be interested in doing another quilt of valour. Everyone is supposed to look for patterns –most people thought that the Bear Paw or a log cabin pattern would be good to do. The idea is that everyone would make a block and that we would take the money for backing/batting etc. out of our funds.

WE ARE GOING TO CANCEL OUR MAY MEETING because it is the same time as Quilt Canada in Halifax and everyone will probably be going to that. We will still have our Sew In Saturday.  The workshop “Pointless Wonder” taught by Pat will be postponed until the June 9 Sew In day.  We will have our potluck in June.

Another discussion was about the getaway to the US to fabricshop/quiltstore visit. Most members thought that the latter part of September looked to be the best date.  MaryJane is going to scout out things for us her next trip.  The plan is to stay at Janet’s cottage on the way up and back to cut down on hotel bills—stay tuned for more details. We were all very interested to hear about the new limits for bringing goods home. This is good news for fabric shoppers.

Minutes of our February 2012 meeting

Minutes of February 2012 Meeting
This was our quarter auction and we all went home with some treasures!  Thank you Alice for organizing it.

Our fat quarter theme last month was red and the winner was Emily.  She has chosen batiks for March’s theme.

Mary Jane spoke about the bibs we are making at our March meeting. She says we need 2 layers of flannel and one of cotton for the front. We will have some ties/velcro donated to fasten them.  I am sure the residents will feel special wearing them—and we will have fun making them!

We had a thank-you from Molly for all the best wishes after her recent surgery.  She is recovering well.

8 people are participating in the secret sister exchange.

The manor is now locking the back door at 4 o’clock for security reasons.  Please knock on the window and someone will let you in.  Also if you are the last person leaving, please make sure the door is securely closed and locked.
Some dates:
March 8-- Retreat and potluck supper with Pins ‘n Needles at the Centreville Hall. It starts at 9:00, costs $3.00 and you can stay and sew all day.
March 26—Ann is giving a double Irish chain class at the Centreville Baptist Church Hall.  It costs $20.00, includes lunch, snacks etc. You can sew all day until 4:00.  Call Ann Steadman if interested.

Our balance (not including charity money for the food bank) is $458.07.

Sew In Saturday is on for Saturday March 10. Lunch will be provided because we are having a Pampered Chef demo—and she is preparing some delicious treats.  I will make the soup I made last month because everyone deemed it was safe to eat!  We had a great time again  last month .

February Reminders for our Meeting

We had a great time at our pot luck supper. Thanks to everyone for the great food.
This month is our quarter auction, with Alice doing the auctioneer duties. All our profits from this will go to the Foodbank.  Anything you would like to donate will be gladly received. Items can be of a quilt theme like fabric or notions, or baked goods, preserves or anything you think someone will want. It does not have to be new so perhaps you have some old patterns or magazines you no longer need. (Husbands do not count as used items for sale)
Alice won the fat quarter draw last month and this month our colour will be anything red.
We hope to have the secret sister signup this month.
The pictures of the blocks we brought in last month for the mystery quilts are posted on our blog.  At the top of the page it looks like a bar and when you click on it, it will take you to the pictures. Also is a picture of the Christmas quilt we made for the Manor.
Hope to see you on Thursday for Fundy Quilters!
